supplemental power
0Anyone have a solar or wind power setup at their house. I’ve been looking at putting up a wind turbine for supplemental power. There is a local company that is selling an installed wind solution right now that sounds pretty good. 35-80ft. tower with a 12′ rotor on the turbine. They say it is providing 100% power for several of the homes they have installed it at. Apparently from what I had previously read, each meter in rotor diameter is supposed to about double the power output.
I am just curious about individual experiences with these, things to do, things to avoid and stuff like that.
Are you trying to get "off the grid"? Because then you will need large banks of batteries, thus negating any money savings.
The county has no restrictions on setting up windmills. That has already been checked out.
I’m not getting off the grid, just want to use it as supplemental power. Currently the power company does not buy any excess power I would generate but do provide credit. I just want lower monthly payments and maybe even eliminate them altogether.
The obvious problem is that the wind doesn’t blow all the time, so you either need a huge flywheel or several batteries.
Of course if you can get a decent amount of credits, then that would definitely help if you can apply those directly to your bill.

The kit that the company is pushing has a 12ft. diameter rotor which is a pretty good size. I’m not going to be using batteries, just hook it to the grid. The wind doesn’t blow all the time but does blow more and harder during the winter months so maybe I can earn credits over the winter and use them in the summer.
I guess how you are able to use credits would be the deal maker/breaker.
id imagine you get a nice little green power tax write off too, you should check that out
Just found build your own wind turbine information.
