Remodeling crew it begins… Out with the old, in with the new
0Old Sub-Zero – had lots of problems with this one.
New Kitchen-Aid
New one has more room in the fridge, but less room in the freezer. However its no biggie since we have a full size freezer in the back. Going to replacing almost everything in the next few months. Here what it looks like now.
Being replaced with a dual convection oven
Changing it out for an Induction Top
New Disposal and Granite Countertop. Same cabinets but changing the stain and putting hinges on the inside.
New floor and taking downing wall paper.
looks like you have your work cut out for you…cant wait to see it done
Looks like real tiles on your floor, what are you replacing them with?
I take it that’s oak. What’s the likelihood of talking you into a different wood? And into a different style of cabinet door?
I like your ideas. I just personally hate the look of oak. It just seems so outdated.
They are, havent decided they will be chosen after 1st stage is complete.

We built the house 17 years ago so yeah its pretty outdated. However we wont be building new cabinets, just sanding and restaining them. We are pressing the budget right now ~85K. The granite we are looking at is 60 a square foot installed for the 3cm version. Appliances with install will be pushing 20K after is all said and done and the floor extends from the kitchen to the pantry, laundry room, bathroom and garage entry. Also going to replace the wood floor in the living room to match.
Fair enough – that’s a substantial investment, and I respect that you can only do certain things. What colour stain are you thinking? Lighter or darker?
I am having my basement done this summer and that’s going to run me around $65K all told. Damn things get expensive quickly

Most likely darker, but we are going to do a few test panels to find which color we really want. When we redid the master bath our budge almost doubled redoing fixtures and adding body jets to the shower.
Are you doing the finishing work yourself? It’s going to be a bitch to stain those; appears to have your typical "oak" type stain and a polyurethane finish. I doubt you will get even most of the finish off, especially on those finished returns and the raised panels, typical scoop and 3/8" beaded doors, lots of areas hard to get at. Also have you thought about what you’re going to do with the holes and color differences once you remove the hinges and go with concealed euro cup hinges? The color alone under the hinges will be different than the rest of the cabinets due to age and other things.
Just some stuff to think about, not to knock you down. Just couldn’t justify putting granite on those cabinets. It’s not as bad though, they are production face frame (good) overlay cabinets but sometimes I see people on tv buying like ikea/home depot cabinets, putting granite on top and installing decent appliances in a 800k home and calling it a high end kitchen.
good luck though, looks like a fun project

No we have contractors that have done all the work around the house. The cabinets aren’t cheap home depot brand. They were custom built when we built the house. At the time its was a very modern kitchen, but its extremely dated now with the cabinetry and corian countertops.
Yeah reminds me of my parents’ custom home they built in 1994

What exactly is bad about Ikea cabinets?
Replacing custom cabinets with Ikea would be like tearing the leather out of an M3 and putting in cloth.
Why?
Is this a serious question?
Yes.
When you’ve worked with them before, why were they substandard?

They aren’t substandard for a $200k spec home… they are substandard for a $500k Custom home
And this is because…?

Aaaaand bookmarked for later
Because they’re ply or pressboard with a veneer, as opposed to solid woods like you would expect in a high-end custom kitchen. They have nice hardware, but it is not as nice as you could get. It’s just average. They look nice enough for the average home, but upon closer inspection, they are not everything that would be expected by someone paying $500,000 for a 3-4k square foot custom home.
