Remember when $500k was a lot for a house?
I’m looking at houses in my area and $500k doesn’t mean much anymore. I remember about 10 or 15 years ago I knew a guy in high school whose parents built a $500k house and it was a mansion with granite floors throughout and had big iron gates out front. Back then I was floored that their house cost a half of a million dollars. Now, I’m looking at a > 100 years old house with 3 bedrooms and 1.5 baths for $450k as an entry level house for a growing family.
That sucks… $500k here will get you a high end 4500 sq ft house
In northern nj, if you want to live somewhere worth raising a family, $400k seems the entry asking price (though I doubt anyone is getting what they are asking these days). Taxes between $5-10k/year as well.
Out here, you get this for $500k:
I would probably build a $300k home on a large piece of property if I had the money. I don’t think I would want to maintain that much house.
Here’s what’s for sale in the area where I work:
Whole shitloads of those. In that particular neighborhood, the homes start at $1.3mil, average 6k sq/ft, and 45% have elevators. All of them are decked out. Hand carved bars in the basements, each one a little different. The guy who built them owns this:
He gave the house across the street from his house to his drywall contractor. Because the guy converted the builder to Christianity. I’ve been in the Atlanta White House. It’s not that great.
hahaha @ wanting to live in replica white house.
of course the bushes out front spell "god <3 you" and the owner seems like an extremist
Yep, $500k still gets you that here…

Those houses look amazing for around 500k.
I live in Toronto and you can’t get anything close to that at 500k. A suburb of Toronto will have houses for 500k that are about 2200-2500sqft in cookie cutter subdivisions with minimal land, a garage that barely fits 2 cars, and nothing special inside the house itself.
