Painting kithcen cabinet crew?

Old oak.

Painting white rather than replacing or restaining (don’t try to convince me otherwise – already made color scheme choices around it)..

So..

Thoughts?

Sand..

Prime (oil based)

Paint (oil based kitchen and bath)

Sand

Paint (same)

Sand

Paint

(wet sand)

Too much sanding? I need a specific brush for oil based versus the latex we’ve used in the rest of the house, right?

How about doors? Should I rent an HVLP sprayer and do them out in the garage or should I brush them too (I’ve heard mixed reviews on this?)

Thanks Remodel Crew!!

I actually watched an interesting show on Canadian TV. Basically it was design on a budget.

On the show they did a kitchen reno and painted the cabinet doors with automotive paint. They did the prep themselves and took the doors to an automotive body shop and had them paint them.

The results were awesome.

Let me see if I can find an example.
You shouldn’t need to sand between coats of oil paint, you would sand them down and sometimes it is necessary to strip the clear coat/top coat off of everything or it won’t adhere properly..

Once prepped prime with a sandable primer, scuff it, and paint everything, wait for it to dry (like a day) and paint again. 2 coats should do it. Wet sanding or sanding oil based paint is in for failure. Renting an hvlp unit is probably not going to yield professional results but with experience spray finishing is far superior. I can spray stuff in a 1/4 of the time typically and get clean flat finishes. However more and more am I spraying 1 coat and brushing on the second because people these days want to see things hand brushed. Don’t ask me why, but I guess people are trying to bring old back. They want everything rustic antique and old looking. If you do spray don’t buy anything from home depot, all of their finishes, behr, minwax.. they are all shit and won’t produce anything of quality. I prefer ML Campbell, Pitsburg, Benjamin Moore.
For the cat’s ass in gloss paint with max durability, use linseed oil paint. It takes several days to dry, but the finish is about bulletproof.

Benjamin Moore, Pratt & Lambert, Muralo are quality paints. Big box store paint is pigmented dog piss.
Picked up the goods today.

TSP for initial clean up.
"Krud Cutter" to remove top coats of poly and prep for paint
Sanding blocks and tack cloth for clean up
Sherwin Williams "kitchen and wood" primer (oil based)
Sherwin Williams Regular White (oil with kitchen finish – semi gloss)
New hardware (hinges and pulls)

I’m ready to rock. I’ve decided to brush the entire project and will not sand between paint coats unless I have any runs or major brush strokes.

Wish me luck~!
