Need help with furnace ASAP.

Im trying to relight the furnace but when I let go of the pilot button, the flame turns off. Ive tried holding it down up to 5 minutes and get the same problem. What’s wrong?

Edit: How much is a normal service charge to have someone come out and look at/fix the problem?
Chances are the thermocouple is burned out. You should be able to replace it yourself.
Assuming your furnace isn’t older than dirt, it’s a thermocouple. If it is older than dirt, it may be a thermopile. Does the gas valve have only nutted connections, or is there a spot where two wires land under screw terminals? If you don’t see wires and screws, you have a thermocouple. They are available in 12" and longer, that being their total uncoiled length. An average skill home mechanic can handle replacement. Shut off gas, remove the thermocouple nut from the gas valve, and then the thermocouple mounting. Measure the straightened length, and go get one the same size. Home Despot, and Lowes both sell them for around $10. When forming the tubing, do not kink it, or the replacement will be FUBAR. Installation is the reverse of removal. Then relight your furnace. If you called me out to take care of it, total charge would be around $100, including part.
