Lighting Design Help

I want to put recessed lighting in my living room which currently has no wall or ceiling lighting for general ambient lighting. The room measure 26′ x 14′ with standard 8′ high ceilings. The house is a ranch so installation and wiring shouldn’t be an issue. I am looking for help with respect to choosing an appropriate layout as well as proper sizing and wattage for the lights. Can anyone here point me in the right direction? So far I have been using the Home Depot 1-2-3 book and it mentions 6′ spacing, but little else. I can get some pictures of the room if that would be at all helpful. Thanks for any help.

There are dozens of different sizes, baffle styles, and types of lamps available for recessed can fixtures. Gather your room measurements, paint finish/color, include number, size of windows, and the direction they face, and digital pictures, and take it all to a store that sells lighting products.

The companies who manufacture fixtures have software available which will help the salespeople give you accurate spacing, placement, and wattage, once you’ve decided what trims and fixtures appeal to you. Much better than SWAG.

Thanks for the advice.

You’re welcome. I’ve found it’s better to defer to people who have education/resources in these areas before cutting holes in the ceiling.

Since it sounds like you’re planning to do the work yourself, ensure that you’re installing and wiring everything in accordance with the latest edition of the NEC. Some recessed cans are meant to be installed in an insulated ceiling, and others are not.

While I’ve never heard of a homeowner drowning from their own bad plumbing job, plenty of houses burn from inferior electrical work. Be safe.
3 of the 4 lights are installed and on a dimmer in the bedroom. I will likely post pictures when it’s complete. I will try to tackle the living room and 3 ways next.
