Knife Set for Wedding Registry – Home Cooks
0Getting married soon and still adding items to the registry.
The fiance and I are both amateur cooks, but really enjoy it. Up until now, we’ve used whatever hand-me-down knives parents have thrown our way (not literally, thatd be creepy..and were not in the circus).
Knives are the only item Im hung up on. We both really want a good set to fill out our kitchen. We’re registered at Bed Bath, and Beyond.
Using suggestions I’ve found from search threads, the top suggested brands appear to be :
Shun
Global
Wustof/Henkle
F. Dick
Most of these are available at BBB. Being novices, Im not sure if the Shun’s are really worthwhile for the price. For nighltly home dinner use, and for big dinner parties, what would be a decent selection to register for?
I know sets tend to give you a lot you dont really need, so Im ok with single piece selections. They do seem to have some decent ‘Starter sets’ but given this is a one-time opportunity, Im not sure if I should be listing more.
Any suggestions would be wonderful, thanks!
For reference:
If you can get a Shun they are well worth it, I just picked one up and love it. Fits my hand perfectly. Im getting this for my parents
it has pretty much every knife you need. However always go and try out a few knives to find out which fit you hand best. I was going to get a Wusthof Icon until I held one and it didnt feel right. My second choice would of been the Pro S set from Henkels
Thanks Beason. I plan to go ‘fitting’ this weekend to ensure I dont put anything on the list that isnt going to feel right.
Ill be sure to check on the Shun classics. Really appreciate it.
I have Henkel, they work great for me. I used better but for the price, I think their worth it.
Thanks Squeege. Ive seen mostly Henkel in homes around the area (quintesential suburbia) so wasnt sure if they were actually good quality of something that was bought just because their friends said they were expensive.
Good to know there’s something actually to it. Didnt get a good chance to go this weekend. Hopefully tonight/tomorrow will open up more time.
Appreciate the advise!
I have Shun set and love it. I had a set of the cheaper Henkels before and the Shuns hold their edge much better. I also have bad boy, which is what led me to picking up the Shun set.
that Ken Onion knife is awesome. Held one for awhile and loved the design and fits my grip perfectly, but at twice the price of the 8" Chefs I decided to go with the Chefs.
Yeah, didn’t feel the need to pony up for the whole Ken Onion set, but I love the chefs knife. I use it far more than any other knife.
messermeister destroys all yo shit…f yo henckels/wusthoff
just get the best 7" santoku you can find
global or wusthof trident make some really good ones that do everything you need them to
but ive seen some really expensive ones in the $250-$300 range that are fantastic (good balance and ‘look’ classy and expensive, if that matters to you)
shit I only use that one knife for cooking and preparing nowadays
