How do I refinish/stain an oak bedroom set
I just bought a used oak bedroom set. There is nothing wrong with the current stain nor are there any scratches that need to be fixed. I simply want to change the color of it all from natural oak to Minwax Ebony.
What is the best way to do this. Is it necessary to sand it all first or can I just apply the darker stain to the top. Some quick internet searching has just left me confused because the advice seems to be a 50/50 split between sanding first or just going over the top.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
from experience, if the stain is a darker color, you can go right over the top of it. but it may be uneven, i would try staining a small area where you cant see first, then see what the results are. if theyre to your liking go ahead and do it. if not then you can sand down a little bit
Sanding isn’t necessary
But smooth, sexy wood is so much smoother and sexier. You’ll be surprised, even if you think its smooth now. Get some super fine wet+dry paper in a few progessive grades, put on a movie and by the end of the movie you’ll be feeling the difference
Whether you choose to sand it or not, just make sure you clean it up properly before applying the new stain.
You will need to sand down the previous finish otherwise the stain won’t penetrate. Most furniture receives a minimum of lacquer or polyurethane on top of the stain to protect it, and the stain will just fall right off of it, so to speak. Also don’t use minwax stains they are shitty and literally watered down. Use ML cambell, or Var, check locally for them, any stains/finishes home depot carries are crap. And intentionally because they want you to come back within 1-2 years. A good finish will outlive you.
furniture these days is made with cheap wood and mainly made to just ressembel the real stuff. I have tried sanding/staining cabinets and the results were horrible. TEST it on a back corner first and see if its wut u want.
The furniture is oak of a good quality, its just the medium oak finish isn’t really my style.
The only reason I was going to use minwax is because they make the only Ebony stain I was able to find.
