HomeOwners: Good places to read and get ideas for home improvements.

I want to start upgrading and changing the style of my home but have no really good starting point. Any help?
wife and I get ideas from architecture & design mags. And we always find new ideas at the parade of home tours we do (though I dunno if they do that where you live).
We get Metropolitan Home.

Also try for ideas others have tried.
Assuming you are doing this to sell your house…

Anything you can do to add modern trends to an older home is good. This gives people the feeling that they are in a newer/nicer home than they really are. And since most people shop for homes at the top end of their price bracket, they will feel like they are getting a good deal. Don’t go too overboard or you will never recover the cost, but what you can get away with will pay off.

Granite counter tops really help…if they $$$ fit. Try going to a granite shop and looking for scraps/reminants. If you live in a smaller house, you probably have smaller counters. "Scraps" from larger homes might just be big enough for your house.

Fresh paint is always a good move. But don’t do it yourself unless you are confident you can make it look good.

New flooring always goes a long ways. Whether it is simply new carpet, or wood or tile. New makes the house look great.

Curb appeal…update your landscaping. Styles/trends have changed over the years. First make sure what you do have is kept up…then update when you can.

Take a drive around your area and look at the other homes in your price range, both new and used. Get an idea of what your competition looks like.
Wife and I go snooping in "open houses" and model homes for ideas

i dont know how or why i started getting this magazine but it shows you everything
Depends on what type of home you want. Design ideas can come from many places. I have an old farmhouse so I’ve gotten ideas from watching old movies. I’ll see some moulding I like or doors, built-ins, colors etc… As an all around design ideas thing I enjoy Architectural Digest. Sometimes it’s a bit but I have gotten some neat ideas.
