Homebrewers: Rate my "custom" starter kit

0

After reading the beginner’s section of Charlie Papazian’s The Complete Joy of Homebrewing, 3rd Edition, and other information on the Internet, I’ve compiled a list of everything I think I’ll need to start homebrewing.

8 oz. one-step sanitizer
24 qt. brew pot
7 gal. plastic bucket
5 gal. glass carboy (w/ thermometer, airlock and universal drilled bung)
Solid rubber 6.5 stopper
3′ of 1" I.D. rubber tubing (blow-off hose)
6′ of 3/8" I.D. rubber tubing (siphoning)

Large hose clamp
24" 3/4" racking cane (w/ bucket clip)
21" stainless steel spoon
Jet carboy and bottle washer (w/ faucet adapter)
8" funnel

Anything I don’t need or conversely, anything that’s a "must-have" for a beginner that I’ve missed? Also, I’m a bit confused as to how the siphoning works, can someone better explain that to me?
bottle capper?

siphoning is easy, just put the car boy higher up than the bottles, blow into the carboy to get the siphon started and then let gravity work
You need a bottle capper for sure.

One thing you may want to do if you plan to brew for a while is get a bigger pot. It makes it easier and if you do larger batches, you can save money buying it now verse later.

You may also want to get a 6.5 gallon carboy to use instead of the bucket.

I thought you wanted to keep everything sanitary?

I’ll be kegging into a Party Pig, a bottle capper isn’t necessary. It was my understanding that I’ll need to siphon the beer into the bucket, then siphon into the keg from the bucket.

You can use an auto siphon instead, it is what a lot of people use so they don’t have to do that. You just pump it and it does all the work.

Yeah you do that when you add the priming sugar.

You also need to siphon from the primary fermenter to the secondary fermenter if you are using a secondary.

that’s what I thought. I’m not using a secondary fermenter just yet.

I’ve already added an auto siphon to my wish list. I posted the same thread in the main forum and someone else recommended the same thing

How much does the party pig hold?
I thought that they only held 1-2 gallons?
Party pig holds 2.25 gallons

I wouldn’t go without an auto siphon

I’d get a thingy of (name brand) Oxyclean to soak whatever you ferment in to get yeast crust and other junk off of the inside without scratching. 1 tbs/ gallon of water

Star-san is the best sanitizer, get that. Small amounts also work as yeast nutrients (sort of)

Sign up on homebrewtalk.com and post this in the general beer brewing or noob section. They’ll be better able to answer your questions.

I like Iodophor much more then starsan.
Looks good, only thing I would recommend is the Papazian book.
I would definately get an autosiphon. It makes siphoning a lot easier.

I would also get a 6.5 carboy versus the 5 gallon so you have more room. You probably wont need to use a blow off tube if you have that.

As everyone else said, you need a bottle capper.

Charlie’s out of date, leave it on the shelf If you want to buy a brewing book is the starter book to get

Why? Starsan is just a little more expensive, but takes less time, and doesn’t stain equipment. It also feeds the yeast and doesn’t contribute any off flavors.
