Help me fixup my future "Man Room"

Update 5/28 - scroll down for pics

This room is going to be dedicated as a man room. Basically it’s a room where I can escape from "teh wife" and play some video games/use the computer. I’m also going to be setting up a 5.1 surround sound for playing music off my computer

It currently has wood paneling covering the bottom half of the wall and is painted YELLOW up top

I want to tear it out and just paint it one solid color, but some people are telling me if I select another color up top that it will look better.

The TV stand/computer/desk are all black in color

The room is 12′ x 10′

Facing south

Facing West

Facing North

Facing East

god i hate painted wood

real men dont paint wood

and im guessing those are not solid 6 panel doors so stripping everything wouldnt work

rip all that shit out, patch the holes and darken the walls up a bit, or a lot
I agree rip off the wood panelling, but leave the chair railing up. Not only will this make the room look better, but bigger as well. Also, I would paint the room white (chair railing optional color)… you can never go wrong with white, plus that will also make the room look larger and it will help your furniture stand out more.

If you do go with white, be advised you have to get some color in there some way so it won’t look too bland.
Real men dont worry about color at all, plain wood is best but since that option is not available just paint it white and put some car (or sports) posters up. Make sure a few have scantily clad women and just tell the wife you like the cars (or athletes / teams) and couldnt find the same poster without the chick(s). Everything will work out in the end when all you have to worry about are video games and which TV you want to put in there.
a REAL MAN would cover the wood with diamond plating.

Thats almost too cool for the diamond plating

After doing some research I found this pic, i really like this scheme. What do you guys think?

I like it, the blinds dont really go but hey they keep out the light…mancave FTW

i like the color scheme, that’s about it…. chair railing and base boad ftl, too bland. Looks like it was just nailed to the wall and painted white.
I’m still working on my "man room"… Right now I have an old 60’s Jeep grill, that I am painting, hooking up the lights and hanging on one wall. Then I plan on framing some of my movie posters… also I have a dorm fridge that I plan on putting on the side of my couch… As for the color, I am going with a blue similar to the one on the top half of teh wall you posted…
you should gut that closet out, make it a sliding door, and put your computer in there, that way when your wife comes in you can slide the bitch shut and she wont see the porn
As said before, rip out the wood panel crap.

Paint it dark, trim it white (or real light).

Get black out shades for a better video game and movie watching experience on whatever display you end up using (one you have or one you buy).

Personally, I would turn the closet into a rack for dvd player, HTPC, switcher, etc… and put in a projector for all your video game playing and movie watching.

But hey, that’s me
strip and stain the wood panelling to a dark color, get leopard print wallpaper for the top 1/2 and put a purple felt pooltable in the center of the room

I like the way you think
wow this thread came back from the dead. I am actually about to begin working on this today/tomorrow with ripping the paneling out.
take pics of the progress. This forum moves so slow, it’s good to see some new pics/threads.
Based upon the picture that you chose as an option, are you wanting to go darker? or Brighter?
OK here is an update. Ive been working on other projects like setting up my big screen TV, painting the garage and painting some other rooms.

I ripped out that wood paneling and it seems like the rooom was painted brown before the yellow/paneling era. I have patched/sanded/primed the walls and I have ripped the carpet out. I am now ready for paint.

I caulked the crown molding so now there is no ugly gaps like before. I am also going to install a ceiling fan, but thats not a priority right now with winter coming along. That cardboard cutout is a template of the computer desktop that I will be putting into the closet. This way I have more space for the couch and TV that eventually be in here.

Thats a piece of coax sticking out of the wall. Eventually a TV will go on this wall.

I want to put some cool art on this wall. Maybe have a rasterbated picture, I’m still undecided.

This is the wall where the couch will be placed.

any thoughts or ideas?

I really like it. Solves the white wainscotting problem and leves the rail. You could still "man it up" with framed posters, etc. that would look sweet. Other options would be a dark red color.

When my man and I buy a house, I want him to have his own man room where he can store all his crap, preferably with his own bathroom (kinda like what we have now in our apartment). Except I would be buying him the Playboy shower curtain, some Betty Page pinup posters, and his own mini-fridge for his World of Warcraft raid needs.

I’m so fortunate that I found a girl like you

Not *you*, but a girl *like* you Hahaha
i like the darker colors, but i would opt for a natural dark wood for the trim, and a larger crown detail.

what will you do about keeping beer cool?

rasterbation is a great idea; you can rotate large pieces of iconic art!

hmm…my only other contribution would be to recommend some quality beanbags, suede maybe, with a low round table
Here is a latest update. I keep forgetting to take pictures. This is an off/on project where I’ll hunker down and for like 3 days do nothing else but work in the room and then go and do something else.

I installed the chair rail and painted the walls/ceilings. I installed a ceiling fan/light. I am still planning on putting the computer desk in the closet.

Do you guys think I should paint the inside of the closet a different color?

Major things left to do before I can move in:

1. Carpet - I’m thinking a grey color

2. Closet - Computer desk

What you guys think so far?
Paint looks like it is for a toddler’s room. No offense intended, just the first thought when I saw the pics.
TV and cable is so passez. I have been watching movies and television over the internet. Ad some playboy memorabilia to it.
is that the final color? are those pics accurate? it might just be me, but i think that top color would give me a headache after a while with the way the light reflects off of it.

i definitely like the two toned look with the chair rail. i would have liked to do that for my former man room (that has since been converted into a baby room ). i had a blue that was somewhere between slate grey and a mid-dark blue. one thing that worked really well was getting some wall hangers for my guitars. if you play an instrument, you should use it as decoration in one way or another. i think it is much better than framed posters.

i’d have to say that the closet for computer desk might get a bit claustrophobic, plus makes it hard to take advantage of a decent sound setup (which means nothing if you are using headphones). i think the idea of using the closet to store your entertainment stuff is a good idea.
With that big of a window, for a cozy man room, I would have gone with a red and dark tan two-tone
Not a fan of the top color, but nice looking work none-the-less
I think it looks good. Once you get furniture/decorations in there it won’t look so harsh.

Keep the work in progress pics coming!
the color in those pictures must be messed up, or just look odd on this monitor. The previously mentioned tan and red-two tone would have looked nice. I really like the desk in the closet idea. Ditto on the television also. lol.
I have never seen receptacle installed sideways intentionally when they could be vertically. Is this common in CHicago? I know that Electrical code is interpreted differently in Chicago

I agree. I like the look too.

I didn’t mind the wainscotting look myself, either.
Wow…the colors gave me a headache just looking at them on this monitor. The tan and red two tone would have been grand.
What exactly is the Man room used for?? office, hanging playing ps2/3 xbox360? recreational drugs? j/k

It’s not exactly the colors I would have gone for but, you may have a surfing thing.

Sugguestions
1. TONE down the top color because it hurts my eyes looking at it on the screen. ( you can get a textured roller or use rags) either use a white/offwhite or a darker complentary blue to go over the tealish color. It will give the room more textured look and tone down the bold teal. The white trim is ok.

2. it looks like a coastal type of room to me. See if you can find an old fucky surf board… either hang it on the wall or possibly make it into a coffee table.

3. find a bamboo looking area rug it will add to the feeling of the room.

4. add back in personal stuff, copies of Maxum, FHM, Stuff. Large G.B. +1 for getting a bigger t.v. nothing extreame but larger.
Great Pic. but just omit the checker pattern floor and go with something that is not to busy.
definitely tone down on the colors, they are very very bright
lol @ "man room" concept
why not make an end table out of off road tires and splash a little camouflage somewhere.

anyways, i know this thread is old but the bottom color is okay top color is terrible!
So when are you moving the kids toys and adding the football/baseball wallpaper at the top of the walls? Seriously the color scheme is anything but a man room..
