Any suggestions how to decorate around this vent to take attention away from it?

looks fine, I think you’re bringing attention to it, only thing I can think of is painting it the same color as the wall

don’t paint it the same color that is tacky as fuck.
if i were you i would just hang artwork near it and just leave it alone, it really isnt an eyesore, look at it as being functional.
You could replace it with something that looks nicer. Paint it the same as the wall or at the very least paint it something other than that ugly grey. Depending on the colors and design of the rest of the room you could paint it a color to match or complement the curtains, carpet, counch etc… Maybe even use multiple colors for a sort of arty thing if you’re into that.

Say what? No it’s not. It’s done in high end homes all the time.

and the good majority of high end homes are rather tacky. i would much rather have the vent the color it is if i lived in his home than paint over it

what makes it tacky? that makes no sense. it is the color of the wall already. leaving it as is makes it stand out, but if you paint it you don’t even notice it’s there.

i’d say paint it the same color as the wall, but don’t paint it on the wall. unscrew it and take it off, then paint it. if you paint it on the wall, it’ll be a pain to ever have to remove it.

And try to paint it with spray paint (I’m assuming you don’t have a gun/compressor). Painting it with a brush is going to be tough and probably not give a nice finish.

Put a clockspider right next to it to draw attention away from it.

Just google search decorative air vents.

Replaced the color in photoshop. Would be more effective if the vent was closed, but you get the idea.
