Anyone have experience with a/c units?
My a/c unit is kinda humming but the fan blades aren’t spinning. Anyone ever experience this before? I’m leaning towards it being the fan motor. I gotta call to get someone out but i’d like to research this as much as possible first.
Danke.
is this a window unit? if so its probably cheaper to get a new one than pay someone to repair the old one
The humming is the compressor pump. If the fan isn’t spinning, see if it starts spinning if you flick the blades. If it does, just keep the fan set to ON at the thermostat until you can get it fixed, otherwise you’ll need to call the HVAC monkeys in the morning.
Although I doubt it, there’s a possibility of it being a capacitor in the condensing unit fan circuit, or the 240 circuit to the condenser being open. The faint humming the OP hears could be just the contactor on the 24VAC control circuit being pulled in.
Which fan, the condenser (outside) or the supply fan (inside)?
Both of them have start capacitors which could be bad, they are like twenty bucks.
It could also be that a fuse is bad and you lost one leg of the 220 feeding the fan due to a short somewhere. Check all the wiring in the fan circuit, carefully, and look for bare rubbing wire. Kill power and replace.
you need some one who knows electricty to look at it.
the buzzing could be the fan/blower motor trying to strtt but not being able to because of a dead run capacitor.
it could be the sound of the compressor running, that you hear.
or it could be the sound of a contactor being pulled in.
if thats the case, you could have no high voltage to the unit, or the contacts are insulated by dirt or a bunch of dead ants.
any of those would cause it not to cool.
